Chicago is a city known for its architectural achievements, and few of these achievements are greater than the expansive and impressive, McCormick Place. Located on Chicago’s beautiful Lake Shore Drive, McCormick Place was built in 1958 and features 2,760,000 square feet of exhibit space. Thanks to the convention center’s impressive size, McCormick Place is the largest convention center in North America and attracts all sorts of visitors from around the world.
Owing to the size and versatility of Chicago’s McCormick Place, thousands of events and exhibitions are held there each year. Events such as the ASIS International Annual Seminar, The 2013 Bank of America Chicago Marathon Health & Fitness Expo, and The Midwest Clinic-International Band and Orchestra Conference are among the annual events which take place at the McCormick Place Convention Center.
McCormick Place has impacted the city of Chicago in a number of ways. Not only is North America’s largest convention center an architecturally astounding feat, but McCormick Place also helped to shape today’s standards and building codes when in 1967, the original exposition hall was destroyed in a great fire. The fire was the result of sloppy fire safety practices because many believed the building to be fire-proof. Following the fire Rolf H. Jensen founded the RJA Group which went on to change Chicago’s building codes leading to safer fire safety practices.
